Seniors offered details on ‘Safe Steps’

Overlake Hospital and the Bellevue Fire Department will host two events to help seniors learn how they can reduce their risk of falls and fires.

Overlake Hospital and the Bellevue Fire Department will host two events to help seniors learn how they can reduce their risk of falls and fires.

The first event will run from 1-4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23 at Factoria Mall, 4033 Factoria Square Mall S.E.

A second event will be from 1-4 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 25 at North Bellevue Senior Center, 4063 148th N.E.

Cost is free.

The hospital and fire department will provide fall and balance screening, information of how aging affects vision, medication screening (an Overlake Hospital pharmacist will review current medications to check for potentially dangerous interactions), home safety assessments, free blood pressure tests, and a variety of handouts and giveaways.

Safe Steps is an educational program established by the King County Fire and Life Safety Association, Healthy Aging Partnership (HAP), and Public Health Seattle King County – Emergency Medical Services Division to increase awareness about the risk factors of falls and fires for older adults, and educate the community on effective prevention techniques.
