Overlake Hospital is making changes to its offerings for senior citizens, including cutting one of its programs – Senior Connections.

Although no doctors were laid off, three staff members were let go as a result of the discontinued program.

A social program, Senior Connections offered a bi-monthly newsletter, plus periodic lunches and get-togethers.

Overlake, however, will be maintaining its educational program for seniors, which offers classes in subjects such as balance and dementia care.

“We’re restructuring, but we’re still maintaining our core services,” said Overlake spokesperson Mary Beth Walker. “We’ve just found ways to more effectively and productively serve the senior population.”

Overlake Hospital will also be closing its Mercer Island Senior Health Center by the end of the month, unrelated to its program changes in Bellevue. This clinic opened in 2003.

Walker said this was due to unforeseen circumstances, but would not elaborate.
