Program offers career advice for girls

On Saturday, March 21, at Bellevue Community College, “Expanding Your Horizons for Middle School Girls” kicks off a career-development program for girls in grades 6-8. The conference runs from 8-11:50 a.m.

Last year, more than 420 girls participated along with more than 70 volunteers from local AAUW (American Association of University Women).

Program sponsors include Puget Sound Center for Teaching, Learning, and Technology; The Expanding Your Horizons Network; and the Lake Washington, Kirkland-Redmond, and Issaquah branches of AAUW.

Girls will have 38 program choices during three sessions. Speakers represent a broad sweep of professional and technical backgrounds including engineering, ecology, medical/dental professions and video gaming.

“Expanding Your Horizons” provides girls opportunities to interact with women who have careers in their fields of interest — and to ask questions about jobs they might not have considered otherwise.

The program is open to girls and their parents for $14 each. Registrations must be postmarked by March 14. For more information, visit http://eyh.pugetsoundcenter.org/ or e-mail eyhbcc_middleschool@hotmail.com.
