It’s been three years to the day that 2-year-old Sky Metalwala disappeared in Bellevue after his mother reportedly left him alone in her vehicle along the side of a road to find gas.

The Bellevue Police Department reported this same time last year it had exhausted all leads in its search for Metalwala, who would be 5 years old now. Police continue to actively investigate the case, and have provided an age-progression photo to show what the boy would look like now.

“Often times, it takes only one witness or key piece of evidence to solve a case,” said Bellevue Police Ofc. Seth Tyler in a Thursday news release. “For example, Bellevue Police recently identified a suspect via a DNA hit on critical evidence found at the scene of a 1980 rape and murder case. The case went cold after all investigative leads were exhausted.  Bellevue detectives continued to investigate the case for the next three decades, and murder charges were filed this year against the suspect.”

Metalwala’s father, Solomon Metalwala, has contended since his son’s disappearance that the boy’s mother, Julia Biryukova, may have turned him over to a friend or family member over concerns she would lose custody of him. Their divorce was finalized in January 2012, with Solomon Metalwala receiving custody of their daughter. Biryukova was interviewed by police, but allegedly became uncooperative and stopped speaking with law enforcement.
