An allegedly suicidal woman hanging off of the I-405 overpass was pulled to safety by Bellevue Police officers Nov. 2.

At approximately 3:02 p.m., police received a report of an individual hanging over a guardrail on the I-405 overpass at Northeast 10th Street. Bellevue traffic camera footage appears to show the individual standing on the edge of the overpass with their back to the railing.

The first officer on the scene began talking to the individual, who was not responding as she was reportedly wearing headphones. That actually worked to police’s benefit and allowed them to quickly coordinate a rescue, said Bellevue Police spokesperson Seth Tyler.

“We train in crisis negotiation, hostage negotiation, and all of our officers who train in hostage negotiation also work our suicide hotline. So, we actually had an officer on scene who works on our hotline,” he said.

After attempts to talk to the woman, one of the responding officers can be seen approaching the woman and pulling her over the railing.

“It depends on the situation and the factors,” said Tyler, noting that the large amounts of traffic below the woman made the . “She was not only endangering herself, but innocent motorists.”

The individual is currently being evaluated at Overlake Hospital, and her identify has not been released at this time due to privacy concerns.
