Newport High School will be hosting the Knights of Pi Math Tournament (KPMT), a math contest for students in fifth through eighth grade Saturday, Dec. 4th.

Newport Math Club members, as well as Newport student volunteers, will be running the contest as a fundraiser to help pay for the registration fees of the other contests in which they compete. Local middle and elementary school students will experience higher level math that extends beyond the typical curriculum in their classrooms and be able to share this experience with other students interested in mathematics.

Competitors will take a variety of tests in different formats: an individual test on a variety of topics, a mental math test where competitors will solve questions posed orally, a speed math test, and team tests (algebra and operations, geometry, and probability and potpourri) in which teams of four students will work together and attempt to solve 10 topic-specific problems in 15 minutes. All of the tests for the competition are written by Newport High’s math club members and will provide problems covering a range of difficulties, allowing students of all experience levels to test their skills.

Last year, the competition had 45 teams and 164 participants from 14 schools all over the state. This year, 60 teams are registered from 17 schools, bringing in 250 participants total. This competition is a great experience for all students and the members of the Newport Math Club are excited to be able to spread their passion for math to the community, said Jake Nonis, Newport math adviser.

Because this contest is a fundraiser, donations of money, time, goods, or services by local businesses and individuals are requested. Newport Math Club also offers a sponsorship program for corporate support.
