Choosing the best route across Lake Washington to Seattle just got easier.

Two new electronic signs on westbound State Route 520 just east of Interstate 405 and on westbound State Route 522 will light up in Woodinville Thursday with travel times to Seattle.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will activate a third sign on southbound I-405 in Kirkland later this spring.

“These electronic travel-information signs are the latest addition to our arsenal of innovative tools that help drivers reach their destination more quickly and safely,” said WSDOT Toll Division Director Craig Stone. “The signs adapt to changing conditions on the road and give drivers real-time information to help them avoid unexpected traffic backups.”

Crews installed the new signs on westbound SR 520 one mile east of I-405 in Bellevue, SR 522 at the SR 202 overpass in Woodinville and southbound I-405 at the NE 72nd Place overpass in Kirkland.

The is one of several federally funded projects under way that will help reduce congestion and improve safety on SR-520 and I-90 in the Puget Sound area. The projects are a cooperative effort between WSDOT, Puget Sound Regional Council, King County and the United States Department of Transportation. This collaboration, known as the Lake Washington Urban Partnership, aims to improve traffic flow across the lake by implementing variable tolling on SR 520 and Smarter Highways on SR 520 and I-90; enhancing transit service and supporting regional carpool and telework programs.
