Luncheon raises $520,217 for YWCA

Pattie Marshall is a living testament to life’s ups and downs. The professional career woman and mother of three has come a long way from the days of a methamphetamine addiction and living on the streets. A string of unfortunate occurrences and choices left her homeless and heartbroken. That is when Marshall reached out to the YWCA for help.

The YWCA is a nonprofit working to advance the quality of life for woman of all ages, races and faith. Marshall bravely stood in front of thousands of women at this year’s YWCA Inspire Luncheon Eastside, to share her story and to encourage other women to not give up hope.

The luncheon, which also featured bestselling author Elizabeth Gilbert, raised $520,217 for programs addressing issues of homelessness, lack of job skills, domestic violence and racial injustice. Last year on the Eastside, the YWCA helped 5,345 adults and youth address some of these issues.

Gilbert summarized the YWCA’s mission when she said, “Everyone in my community is my responsibility.”

Gilbert held a book signing following the luncheon and donated 10 percent of all proceeds back to the YWCA.
