Interlake High School teacher Patrick Colgan pleaded not guilty Wednesday in King County Superior Court to allegations he engaged in a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student from March to June of this year.

Colgan, 33, was arrested by Bellevue Police on Nov. 7, following a report by a mental health provider the day before the English teacher had engaged in a sexual relationship with one of his students during the 2013-14 school year. He was charged with first-degree sexual misconduct with a minor on Nov. 13.

According to the probable cause affidavit, the alleged victim told police Colgan began sending her sexually explicit emails in March, asking her to “engage in sex acts with him,” the report states. Colgan reportedly made sexual contact with the student outside a Kirkland coffee shop in May, and the two exchanged sexually explicit emails until the student broke off the relationship in June. Colgan is alleged to have continued sending the student emails from June to October.

Police interviewed Colgan at Interlake High School on Nov. 7, where the report states Colgan identified the student as the cause of the investigation and then declined to answer a detective’s questions. Following his arrest, the Bellevue School District placed Colgan on administrative leave pending the result of his prosecution.

He is next scheduled for a case-setting hearing 1 p.m. Dec. 30 in King County Superior Court in Seattle.

Colgan joined the district during the 2010/2011 school year at Newport High School on a one-year contract. He signed a similar contract the following year at Sammamish High School before joining Interlake last year.
