This year’s Eastside Winter Shelter for homeless men opens tonight at the former International Paper site at 1899 120th Ave. S.E., in Bellevue.

The 4,000-square-foot site owned by Sound Transit will be open 8:30 p.m. to 8 a.m. daily through March, and was secured through efforts by the city of Bellevue, Eastside Human Services Forum and the Eastside Homelessness Advisory Committee.

The city began operating a severe weather shelter in 2007 after a homeless man died from exposure Christmas night, which later expanded to all-winter.

Sophia Way opened a shelter for women and children Nov. 1 at the United Methodist Church in Redmond.
