Bellevue’s Neighborhood Mediation Program has openings for a free, 20-hour telephone conciliation training class. Applicants should have a positive attitude, good communication skills and the ability to help people resolve problems. The deadline to apply is Oct. 10.

The training will be held on Wednesdays, Oct. 22 and 29, from 5-9 p.m., and on Fridays, Oct. 24 and 31, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at City Hall, 450 110th Ave. N.E. Attendance at all sessions is mandatory.

Eligible candidates for the training must live, work or go to school in Bellevue. They must also be willing to make at least a six-month volunteer commitment following the training, and be available to work a three-hour, weekly shift during business hours. Candidates will be interviewed to determine suitability for the program.

The classes will equip volunteers with the necessary tools to assist neighbors to understand issues, explore options and solve problems. Other important attributes for applicants are a capacity to respect confidentiality and to remain impartial. Telephone conciliation training is a required first step on the path to becoming a volunteer mediator with the city’s mediation team.
