The Bellevue School District will co-host a forum Oct. 29 at the University of Washington featuring Dr. Marc Brackett, developer of the RULER Approach to Social and Emotional Learning. This fall, the district launched Yale’s RULER Approach in grades 3-5 districtwide.

The RULER Approach, based on decades of research on emotional intelligence, is a curriculum intended to develop emotional literacy skills to promote personal, social, and workplace success. Research shows that emotional literacy skills support academic achievement and increase student engagement. These skills also reduce bullying, anxiety and depression among students.

Brackett, from the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, is the author or co-author of more than 100 publications and the primary developer of RULER.

The lecture and panel discussion involving educators from Bellevue and surrounding districts, parents, and community partners will focus on integrating social and emotional skills with academic learning in schools and community settings. Bellevue parents are encouraged to attend.

The free forum will be from 7-8:30 p.m. at 210 Kane Hall on the University of Washington campus in Seattle. People can pre-register at https://selforum.eventbrite.com.
