Flint gives kids a new look for back to school

Flint and Overlake Service League team up to give kids a free back to school haircut

Coupons in hand, more than 20 kids took turns in the barber’s chair at Flint Men’s Grooming in Bellevue today for back-to-school haircuts. FLINT, located on Main Street, teamed up with Overlake Service League to provide free-of-charge haircuts for at-risk boys and girls of all ages.

Trish Carpenter, the director of Overlake Service League, handed out coupons to families with children who use the organization’s services. Overlake Service League provides the community with family assistance, daycare, holiday programs, help with transportation, food and clothing.

The children who attended the event today were treated to a fun Hollywood-themed day including treats, haircuts, styling and photos to show off their new look.

For kids like 8-year-old Simona Mateas and her older sister Emanuela, this was the first time they had ever received a professional haircut in a salon setting.

Flint employee Devon Leggett organized the event.

“I wanted to do this for years and when I brought the idea to Sarah and Alan (Hartgraves, owners of Flint) they were just as excited as I was,” Leggett said. “I love to watch these kids light up after they see their new haircut. It gives them confidence and boost their self-esteem for the first day of school.”

Flint will team up with Overlake Service League once again in September for a two-day event called, Suit Yourself.

The community event will assist unemployed men with getting back into the workforce or making a career change by providing men with gently used suits and apparel and mini makeovers.

The event will run from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., on Sunday, September 13 and Monday, September 14. Participants will then be introduced to recruiters, career coaches and potential employers.
