Dispatches from Katy – GAME DAY

Katy is in full game-day mode.

Chad and I first stopped in at Snappy’s, a local breakfast eatery on Old Highway 90 in Katy – and a Katy Tiger haunt for game-day breakfast.

We sat down with Bobby and Effie Katsabas and Alex Tsounakas, Greek implants to Katy who have owned Snappy’s since 2002.

On game-day, they welcome a packed house to Snappy’s and serve up tons of the Katy fan favorites – the Snappy Special (2 pancakes, 3 eggs and bacon) and the Country Deuces (3 eggs, 2 pancakes and bacon or sausage links).

Some days after practice, the players come in for pancakes and bacon. “They have a good appetite,” Effie said.

“We support them,” Alex said, “and they support us.”

After leaving Snappy’s, Chad and I cruised the Katy neighborhoods, finding plenty of interesting signs, and even an interesting mailbox.

But the best surprise was waiting for us next to Katy Elementary school, where we found Kevin George and his eight-year-old son Dylan out on the front yard. Dylan was wearing his Katy Youth Football helmet, and Kevin was barking out routes for Dylan to run in preparation for his game at 2 p.m., and maybe even a future with the Tigers down the road.

“I’d love to see him out there in that uniform, playing on that field,” Kevin says, pausing to congratulate Dylan on his crisp form with the ball.

Texas football folks. Texas football.
