Daly’s Paint and Decorating is shifting locations this month from downtown Bellevue to the 520 Plaza on Northeast 20th Street.
The third-generation family business, which specializes in manufacturing and retailing wood finishes, will open its new digs on May 26.
The store was previously located on 105th Avenue Northeast, in Bellevue’s central business district. Co-owner Robin Daly said the shop was getting swallowed in that area by all the towering structures that have risen in recent years.
“I can’t even find my own paint store down there any more,” she said. “The tone and tenor has changes so much, it’s just not a good place for a paint and decorating store any more.”
Daly’s new venue is located next to a cluster of other home-decor stores –Fireside Hearth and Home, Ambiente Tile, Ecohaus, and Maison de France to name a few – that are independently owned.
“There’s something about buying local,” Robin said. “It’s not just for food any more.
“Now more than ever, locals want to support independent retailers who are working with passion to survive and thrive, no matter the circumstances of the local and national economy,” she added in a press release.
The Daly’s move comes at a time of uncertainty for most businesses, but this company is no stranger to economic downturns. Founder Walter Daly started his first shop in Seattle 71 years ago, during the Great Depression.
Robin said the company’s strength has been its ability to work out customized solutions for contractors and homeowners.
“We’re extremely hands-on with the projects people bring us,” she said.
Daly’s has been doing business in Bellevue since 1961, and still has its original shop in Seattle.
Robin, who goes by the nickname “Paint Princess,” writes about painting and decorating at her blog, Tintedperspective.blogspot.com.
