Civil War in the park | Reenactors commemorate South’s surrender; raise awareness about Philbrook House

A small group of Civil War reenactors with the Washington Civil War Association, representing Company C of the 4th United States Infantry, came together at Wildwood Park in Bellevue on Thursday to commemorate the 150th anniversary of when Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to U.S. General Ulysses S. Grant at the Appomattox Court House.

A small group of Civil War reenactors with the Washington Civil War Association, representing Company C of the 4th United States Infantry, came together at Wildwood Park in Bellevue on Thursday to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s surrender to U.S. General Ulysses S. Grant at the Appomattox Court House.

The group was also on hand to inform the public about a local effort to save the Philbrook House in Bellevue. Nils Dickmann says since approaching the city council about preserving the oldest structure in Old Bellevue — constructed by a Civil War veteran — he’s learned city staff is now looking for a temporary location in which to possibly site the Philbrook House.

“Bellevue has a bad habit of tearing down history to build their future,” said Carl Hicks, one of the reenactors at the park Thursday.
