City to help residents prepare for extreme weather

The city of Bellevue will hold two open houses this fall to help residents prepare for major wind, rain and snow storms. The first workshop is set for Oct. 28 at City Hall and the second will be at Lewis Creek Park on Nov. 18.

Blizzards, floods and destructive wind storms have hit Bellevue in recent years. Residents can limit the impacts of such events with simple preparations around their homes before an event and some common-sense actions during one, city officials say.

Staff from the Utilities, Transportation, Fire and Police departments will be on hand at the workshops. Representatives from AAA Washington, Puget Sound Energy, the Bellevue School District, King County Metro Transit and Allied Waste will be at the Oct. 28 open house.

The first open house will be 4-7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 28, on the first-floor concourse of City Hall (450 110th Ave. NE). This event will expand on last year’s snow and ice focus to include information on how to deal with heavy rain and wind storms.

The second open house will be 4:30-7 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 18, at Lewis Creek Park (5808 Lakemont Blvd.). It will cover wind and rain and also target ice and snow concerns of residents in south Bellevue, where steep roads and higher elevations present particular challenges.

An Extreme Weather Response section on the city’s website, at http://www.bellevuewa.gov/extreme_weather_response.htm, covers the city’s snow response priorities map, emergency preparedness, emergency phone numbers, post-storm garbage and debris collection and more. Residents can also find that section by going to the Bellevue website at www.bellevuewa.gov and clicking on the blue and orange “Extreme Weather Response” icon on the right side of the page.

People can sign up to receive e-mail updates by phone or computer during extreme weather events.
