Bellevue students face possible swine flu exposure

A camp on Orcas Island was closed today after six children and one adult exhibited flu-like symptoms on Thursday night.

Out of the 300 children from King County and Richland that were sent home, 267 of the children were from the Tyee Middle School in Bellevue, said San Juan County Health and Human Services Director John Manning. The students arrived at the camp on Tuesday evening. The other 36 children sent home arrived to the camp from the Christ the King school in Richland.

Health officials said that so far, none of the Richland area children have exhibited symptoms.

According to Health officials, Bear Creek School, a K-12 school in Redmond, closed Friday as well.

Manning also clarified that the closure of Camp Orkila is a precautionary measure because of the concern about the spread of swine flu. He said there is not any positive indication the H1N1 virus is involved so far.

No cases of swine flu have either been confirmed or classified as “probable” in San Juan County. On Thursday, April 30, Manning reported that a “handful” of samples from people exhibiting flu-like symptoms had been forwarded to the State Department of Health for testing.
