Five high schools in the Bellevue school district made Newsweek’s annual “Best American High Schools” list.

International School, Interlake, Newport, Bellevue and Sammamish high schools all made the top 500, with International School leading the district at 12. Interlake came in at 48, Newport at 56, Bellevue at 148 and Sammamish at 369.

“I am very pleased to see Bellevue’s schools once again land on a national list of top high schools.” said Bellevue School District superintendent Amalia Cudeiro. “The ranking reflects this districts’ commitment to the AP (Advanced Placement) and IB (International Baccalaureate) programs and the belief that any student may challenge themselves to higher levels. The ranking also reflects the commitment of our teachers and staff to help all children succeed and challenge themselves in new ways.”

In past year’s, all five schools have made the top 100, most notably in 2009 and 2010, but this year Newsweek modified how it compiled the list, scoring each school on the following self-reported data: graduation rate, college enrollment, SAT and ACT scores, AP, IB and Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) exam scores and the number of such courses offered per graduate.

Interlake was also listed on the publication’s “10 Miracle Schools,” a distinction for schools who’ve done the most with the fewest resources. Interlake placed ninth.

Bainbridge was the only other high school in the state outside of the Bellevue school district to make the list, placing 370.
