Bellevue College announced Thursday that they will partner with local computer coding center Coding Dojo to deliver two new continuing education courses in programming languages and technologies that can help people looking to get into the tech industry or those already working in it.

“We have always prided ourselves on providing quality programs that are aligned with the needs of our high tech employers. By bringing on full-time Coding Dojo instructors immersed in the evolving tech space, we know we’ll be able to arm our students with the most in-demand technologies,” said Mark Veljkov, product manager with Bellevue College.

Beginning next month, the college will offer two courses on two software stacks used to build websites and web applications: one focusing on Ruby on Rails, the other on JavaScript/MEAN. The curriculum is based on Coding Dojo’s existing 14-week-long bootcamp teaching HTML, CSS and three stacks: Python, Java and Ruby on Rails or IOS.

The partnership will benefit currently employed people looking to learn more about coding and get a leg-up in their industry, be that businesspeople or even those already working in the tech industry. While a large population of the Eastside currently works in the industry, many do not actually do programming work.

“We obviously have a lot of people in jobs in tech around here, but within that, very few people are actually front-line developers,” said Saito, who has worked at Microsoft, Amazon and Groupon. “I would say there’s less than 20 percent of people at Microsoft who actually work on code.”

Bellevue College will be the first college to join Coding Dojo’s Coding for Higher Education Program offered in Seattle, Los Angeles, San Jose and surrounding areas.

The college was a natural partner for Coding Dojo because of their progressive nature in education and workforce development, Coding Dojo officials said.

“Coding skills are rapidly becoming a requirement in all industries and we want to give as many students as possible the opportunity to learn something that unlocks creativity and opens new career pathways,” said Richard Wang, CEO at Coding Dojo.

The Bellevue College Ruby on Rails course will run from September 2016 to January 2017 and the JavaScript/MEAN course will run from November 2016 to February 2017. Each course will include three modules covering different aspects of the programming stack, costing $1,299 for an individual module or $3,500 for all three.
