Forty-five people will become U.S. citizens in a special ceremony in Bellevue on Monday.

Forty-five people will  become U.S. citizens in a special ceremony in Bellevue on Monday.

Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Seattle Field Office, in conjunction with the Bellevue Downtown Association and City of Bellevue, will present the special naturalization ceremony at 11 a.m. at Bellevue City Hall. The event is part of USCIS’ annual celebration of Constitution Day and Citizenship Day.

Jose Garcia-Pabon, an educator who has specialized in community and sustainable rural development, will give the keynote address.  Bellevue Downtown Association Board Member Shiv Batra will deliver brief welcoming remarks, and Mayor Conrad Lee will congratulate the new citizens.

Constitution Day and Citizenship Day are celebrated on Sept. 17 in remembrance of the signing of the Constitution in 1787. Congress first underscored the significance of U.S. citizenship in 1940, when it designated the third Sunday in May as “I Am an American Day.”

More than 32,000 immigrants will become citizens at 158 ceremonies across the country from Sept. 14 to Sept. 22.
