What are the two biggest issues you want to address and how do you plan to address them if elected:

Education – As an experienced education leader who has been an elected School Board Director since 2001, serves as Washington State School Directors’ Association Legislative Representative for King County school boards, and Past Chamber of Commerce Chairman, I understand firsthand the need to make our public schools a top priority. I also know that whether our residents have children or not, they often choose to live in our 41st District neighborhoods because they know that strong school systems translate to thriving communities. We must ensure that all children have the opportunity to succeed in good K-12 public schools. Graduates should be prepared for and have access to higher education in universities, community colleges, technical colleges, and apprenticeships.

Today, basic education in Washington State is defined from a 1970’s model. Three decades later, basic education needs to include technology skills, 21st century career paths and global competition, and funding for increased responsibilities mandated upon schools. While we shouldn’t forego other important responsibilities of state government, our state must provide a stable and adequate funding source for its K-12 public schools.

Jobs – The quality of life and economic vitality of our region depends on good jobs now and for future generations. Employers need an educated and skilled workforce, transportation choices that will move employees and goods, and housing choices for their employees nearby. I will work to create and sustain a healthy business climate that keeps aerospace jobs here, supports our high tech community, fosters emerging green industries, and helps small businesses grow.
