The Newport High School jazz band has been named a finalist in the Essentially Ellington competition and festival, set for New York City on May 8-10.

Newport played at the festival in 2001 and 2006. It is among 15 nationwide this year who have been invited to participate.

The event includes workshops and the chance to perform with Jazz at Lincoln Center artistic director Wynton Marsalis.
