This weekend, a handful of notable Northwest musicians will play a special benefit show at Bake’s Place in Bellevue.

The show – which will feature Don Mock (guitar), Dan Dean(bass), Barney McClure (jazz pianist) and Mark Arrington (drums) – will serve as a benefit to raise funds for the “Howard Roberts Project.”

An American jazz guitarist, educator and session musician, Howard Roberts is often referred to as the “most heard guitarist in the world.”  In addition to playing in studio, Roberts contributed to several television and movie projects – including the theme from “The Twilight Zone,” “The Munsters,” “Bonanza” and “The Brady Bunch.” Roberts died of prostate cancer in 1992.

The brainchild of Roberts’ son, Jay, the “Howard Roberts Project” is a documentary film project featuring exclusive interviews with session musicians who worked closely with Roberts during his extensive career. Among them are guitarists Bob Bain, Mike Anthony, Mitch Holder and Lee Ritenour, as well as American Bass Laureates Carol Kaye and Chuck Berghofer,

The show at Bake’s Place will be presented in the style of “VH1 Storytellers”; in addition to performing Howard Roberts originals, the musicians will take the opportunity to share stories about their encounters with Howard. The songs performed will be recorded in the coming weeks, in Seattle and Los Angeles, and will make up the soundtrack to the documentary.

Jay Roberts said he is making the movie about his father because he thinks it’s important to let the next generation of musicians know their history. He felt it was the right time to make the movie because he wanted to speak to the people who experienced, first hand, the golden era of Hollywood in 1950s and 1960s.

“These people are in their 70s and 80s now,” Jay said. “I wanted to capture them in this film.”

He decided to hold the show at Bake’s Place because he already has a good relationship with owner Craig Baker; students from the Roberts Music Institute, based in Bellevue, perform there every month.

Sunday’s show will also include a live Gibson Guitar auction; the live performance will also be filmed as part of the documentary.

Tickets for the benefit show ($50) are available now at both the music institute’s and Bake’s Place websites. The show will take place on Sunday, April 28, from 6-9 p.m. at Bake’s Place, 155 108th Ave NE, Suite 110, Bellevue.
