Movie Review | ‘Slumdog’ beats ‘Hotel for Dogs’ … paws down

“Hotel for Dogs” and “Slumdog Millionaire” are so different and are nearly opposites, but both very interesting.

“Hotel for Dogs” is a very fun film starring Emma Roberts from “Nancy Drew” (Julia Roberts niece), as orphaned Andi, and Jake T. Austin from Disney’s “Wizards of Waverly Place” as her brother, Bruce.

After moving from foster home to foster home, they get stuck living with a grouchy rocker couple Lois and Carl, played by Lisa Kudrow and Kevin Dillon, who always serve them disgusting microwave foods. They’ve also been keeping their dog, Friday, a secret for three years.

Soon they stumble upon an abandoned hotel where two stray dogs were living and create the “Hotel for Dogs.” With the help of a few new friends, they are soon picking up and rescuing all of the strays in town.

“Hotel for Dogs” was an enjoyable movie aimed for children five to 10, and if I were a little younger I would have loved it.

“Slumdog Millionaire” is an amazing film about a “slumdog,” someone who grew up in the slums of India. Jamal Malik is the main character, a Mumbai teen who tries to win 20 million rupees on the Indian version of the game show “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?”

The film starts with Jamal, played by Dav Patel, being questioned by the police, who suspect him of cheating. They torture him and he flashbacks many times to his life in the slums, on the road, meeting vicious local gangs, and of his lost love, Latika. He is telling the police the memories that led him to many of the answers he gave on the game show.

The film was truly inspiring and simply incredible.

Both movies had their moments, but I preferred director Danny Boyle and co-director Loveleen Tandan’s “Slumdog Millionaire.”

If you are going as a family with younger kids, “Hotel for Dogs” is a nice, very cute and entertaining choice. “Slumdog Millionaire” is best for most other audiences, such as couples, families with teenage children.

If you decide on “Slumdog Millionaire,” don’t fail to stay for its hilarious dance scene during the credits.

Also, if you love the movies, you should attend the Academy Awards Party on Feb. 22 at Lincoln Square Cinemas that benefits the Children’s Hospital. I’ll be there myself, reporting on the years best films. If you want more information, just visit the site www.childrens-ride.com.
