Bellevue Youth Symphony Orchestra presents Masterworks Concert 1 at Theatre at Meydenbauer, Nov. 6.

Bonding time between me and my dad growing up often consisted of me watching him defeat bad guys on the video game “Turok.” How awesome is it that the sound track from the video game, “Turok 2,” composed by Darren Mitchell will be part of the program for BYSO’s performance?

Imagine a culture where we don’t just mourn for our loved ones who have past on, we celebrate them. At the Dia de Muertos celebration, create sugar skulls and paper skeletons, explore expressive community altars and march in a musical procession lit by candles to remember the dearly departed. The celebration joins together tradition and art to keep alive the very deepest of Mexican culture, where indigenous and Spanish roots intertwine through spectacular sand paintings, special foods, face painting, exquisite rituals and music and dance.

Theater

“Laramie Project” play at Interlake High School, 7:30 p.m., Nov. 17-19 and an additional 1:30 p.m. show Nov. 19.

Interlake students take on a play based on the real tragedy of Matthew Shepherd’s murder in Laramie, Wyo. Shepherd, a 21-year-old gay student at the University of Wyoming, was beaten to death in 1998. Instead of dramatizing murder, the play respectively dramatizes interviews with local people who represent many points of view. The result is a powerful and moving picture of how both violence and compassion can change a town.
