Bellevue resident takes role in ‘Show Boat’

Bellevue once again dips into its broad talent pool of young and aspiring artists with the upcoming performance of Show Boat starring Lake Heights resident Megan Chenovick.

For the first time in over a decade, the musical production of Show Boat opened to audiences on May 13 at Village Theatre in Issaquah. Chenovick steps into the role of Magnolia Hawks to perform a tale of passion, pride, love, and betrayal spanning over five decades. The musical captures such classics as “Ol’ Man River,” “Bill,” and “Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man.”

Originally from Montana, Chenovick traveled to the Pacific Northwest to attend the University of Puget Sound. In 1997, she performed in her first professional show, Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz. Little did she know back then, but the Tin Man performing along side her on stage would one day be her future husband.

“I remember thinking he had a little bit of an ego and I really didn’t like him at the time,” she laughed, remembering back. “Now we enjoy performing together.” Most recently, Chenovick and her husband performed in the ensemble for Oklahoma!

Her musical theater performances include Bye Bye Birdie, South Pacific, Into The Woods, and others.

“I am looking forward to this performance of Show Boat. I don’t think I’ll be nervous because I am having so much fun with this character,” she said. “For Bye Bye Birdie I received a phone call on a Friday afternoon as a last-minute replacement. I had to learn a tap solo with a rip-away-costume that same night and perform the piece through closing weekend. You have more fun when you can rise to the challenge,” she added.

When not working her full-time day job, Chenovick trains with local voice coach Erich Parce. She was a finalist for the Metropolitan Opera National Council along with being chosen as this year’s Tacoma Young Artist. Her opera credits include work with the Seattle Opera Guild, Skagit Opera, Tacoma Opera, and Music of Remembrance.
