Bellevue chorus part of Sweet Adelines International Competition coming to Seattle

A total of 10,000 women will come to Seattle from Oct. 17-23 as women’s a cappella choruses and quartets from all over the world will compete in the Sweet Adelines International Competition.

A total of 10,000 women will come to Seattle from Oct. 17-23 as women’s a cappella choruses and quartets from all over the world will compete in the Sweet Adelines International Competition.

Bellevue-based Pacific Sound Chorus, will sponsor a kick-off show at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 17 and will share the stage with Pacific Rim championship choruses and quartets from Australia and New Zealand. The performances will be at the Washington State Convention Center, Seattle.

This distinctly American singing style started with men singing barbershop harmony at the turn of the century and was soon adopted by women who enjoyed the challenge of a cappella singing. Today, Sweet Adelines International (SAI) is a worldwide organization of women singers in chapters located in Australia, Canada, England, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Scotland, Sweden, the Netherlands and most of the 50 states in the United States.

Pacific Sound Chorus (PSC) will open the show with a series of songs from “The Wizard of Oz”, “The Wiz,” and “Wicked” done in the barbershop style.

Other guest choruses will include Jet Cities Chorus – Federal Way; Greater Auckland Chorus – Auckland, New Zealand; Faultline Chorus – Wellington, New Zealand; and Endeavor Harmony Chorus – Sydney, Australia.

The show also will feature a number of quartets including local award winners “Mojo” and “Live Wire” as well other international competitors. The featured headlining foursome is “Zing!”, the Sweet Adelines 2010 International Quartet Champions.
