In Washington state, we rely on clean water for essentials like safe drinking water, and things that make our state livable and vibrant, like clean beaches, and a healthy Puget Sound. Unfortunately right now, both these things are threatened by what may be the biggest water pollution problem in our state: toxic stormwater runoff. We need leaders who will stand up for solutions.
In the 41st District state Senate race, Democrat Randy Gordon and Republican Steve Litzow are both qualified for the job, but I want to know how they’ll tackle this critical problem of polluted runoff.
We can update storm pipes, retrofit urban streets, and use the landscape’s natural ability to absorb and filter rainfall. But without a source of revenue, we can’t fund this critical work. Right now, the public bears the entire burden of dealing with and paying to clean up this pollution.
We all contribute to stormwater pollution. However, the products that oil companies profit from are the largest contributor to toxic stormwater runoff – they need to pay their share.
As I cast my vote this November, my decision will be based in part on which of the 41st District Senate candidates will be the strongest leader – ready to step up to the big oil companies and fight for the health of our state’s environment and our economy.
