Newport Way was a quiet country road before development of the area turned it into a major arterial. The segment recently annexed to Bellevue (from the Somerset entrance to 150th Avenue Southeast) has not been upgraded and is a hazard to pedestrians.

South Bellevue Community Center, Newport Way Library, Eastgate Park, Aldersgate Church, Tyee Middle School and Edgebrook Swim & Tennis are located on either side of this segment of Newport Way. For many residents, access to these facilities means walking on the narrow strip of dirt beside the traffic lanes while avoiding ditches, metal barriers and watching out for traffic on blind curves.

It is not unusual to see adults pushing children in strollers, kids on bikes, and groups of three or more pedestrians making their way along this hazardous course. At night it is truly terrifying to see people in dark clothing walking this narrow strip while only a few inches away cars are speeding past them.

Sidewalks and bike lanes are urgently needed. Public safety is of utmost importance.
