Uniqlo opens its first Northwest location in Bellevue Square Nov. 6, bringing what the company says is an alternative to “fast fashion” that has filled many large Americans retailers’ stores, but is quickly disposed of.

The Japanese retailer specializes in high quality, mid-price basics for men, women and children in a variety of colors. They are also known for their heat-capturing HEATTECH and quick-drying and light AIRism textiles, and have featured recent collaborations with french stylists or retailers Carine Reoitfeld, Ines de la Fressange, Princesse tam.tam and Lemaire.

“We’ve always put a lot of functionality into all of our items, and in that respect we think those functional benefits are consistent with some of the demands Seattle places its population,” said Larry Meyer, vice chairman for Uniqlo USA. He said the retailer’s range of down jackets and vests, flannel, fleeces and activewear will likely be popular items at the Bellevue store.

The Uniqlo brand is all about simplicity, quality and longevity, the company says. They strive to keep their displays clean, customer service high and clothing items versatile — call it the Ikea of clothing, said company spokesperson Jessica Nadaud.

The first of the seven new stores filling the space formerly occupied by J.C. Penney, Uniqlo will soon be joined by Zara (opening Nov. 11) and House of Hoops, a new retail concept from Foot Locker (opening mid-Nov).

Many of the new shops are expected to bring in more business annually than J.C. Penney.

“This mall stands on its own as being the best mall — they would say in the country, I would say in the Northwest. It is a premiere location,” said Meyer. The company had to be opportunistic and jump on the 16,000-square-foot Bellevue Square location when it opened up, he added.

Retailers and restaurants opening in other locations within The Bellevue Collection include Vince Camuto, VIVO53, FROST and Panda Express. These stores are added to recent openings of Allen Edmonds, Robert Graham, Fuego, Crabtree and Evelyn, and Soft Surroundings. In addition, several temporary stores are open for the season such as Go! Games & Toys, Harry and David, Brookstone and Macy’s Holiday Lane.

Uniqlo is still looking to open another store in Seattle, but if and when will depend on the retail space available, said Meyer.
