Bellevue’s GLY Construction has been honored with the state’s most prestigious civics award.

Secretary of State Sam Reed presented the company with a Corporations for Communities award, which honors exceptional Washington businesses that make community a priority.

Reed presented GLY Construction President/CEO Jim Karambelas with a National Association of Secretaries of State Medallion Award. The Medallion recognizes voter education efforts, civic engagement, government services and a commitment to giving back in the community.

“Although we had many outstanding nominees, GLY Construction is truly deserving of this special honor for its incredible dedication to volunteerism and the community,” Reed said. “What’s even more amazing is that GLY has made such a strong commitment to the community even though the construction industry has struggled during the recession. They really symbolize what our Corporations for Communities program is all about.”

GLY Construction, the large-category recipient of the award, is one of the largest locally owned general contractors in the Puget Sound area. GLY regularly contributes time, money and people to organizations like YMCA, Habitat for Humanity and many others. The firm, which was founded in 1978, has built corporate facilities and distribution centers for the likes of Microsoft, Adobe, Nintendo, Overlake Hospital and Boeing.

Area legislators attended the award ceremony at Reed’s office in the state Capitol, including 41st District Rep. Judy Clibborn, and 48th District Reps. Deb Eddy and Ross Hunter. King County Council Member Jane Hague and Pierce County Auditor Julie Anderson also attended.
