International Paper today announced it will permanently close its container plant in Bellevue within the next several weeks. The move will result in the loss of 76 jobs.

The plant is located at 1899 120th Ave. NE.

“Our company has more capacity in the Northwest than we need, which has led to the decision to close the Bellevue box plant,” said Jim Callerame, region general manager for International Paper.

The Bellevue plant produces corrugated boxes for seafood and industrial companies. The plant began operation in 1967 as Western Paper, which became Western Kraft, then Willamette Industries.

Weyerhaeuser acquired the plant in 2002 with the Willamette Industries acquisition. The plant was acquired by International Paper in 2008.

Plant employees are represented by International Brotherhood of Teamsters District Council 2.
