Medina students to attend national chess championships

Medina Elementary Chess Club awarded two $1,000 scholarships to attend the United States National Elementary Chess Championships, May 12.

Medina’s “Chessplayer of Character Award” recognizes students that excel in chess and academics, with a heavy emphasis on outstanding character.

The winners, Aditya Kannon, 10, and Kevin Song. 9, are Medina Elementary students and members of the chess club, which meets every Wednesday after school.

They will be joining six others from the Medina Chess Club team at Nationals this year, as they compete for individual and team titles of National Chess Champion. Medina’s chess team is aiming to regain their National Championship title that they earned in 2006.
