Overlake Service League seeking people who have been part of its history

Overlake Service League wants to document the history and impact of people who have been involved with the organization. The agency is looking for people to share news clippings, a short written story or photos of themselves or relatives who have been involved with or assisted by the organization.
Overlake Service League was started in 1911 by a group of women living in Bellevue. Referred to as “OSL” by its members, the league’s contribution to Bellevue encompasses more than the thrift store it is known for in Bellevue Square. It is a private nonprofit with a long history in the community.
In its early years, it focused on meeting the needs of a rapidly growing community. Goats were delivered to provide milk for struggling families, a well-baby clinic provided immunizations and routine exams for young children living on the Eastside, tractors and other farming equipment were distributed for families to grow their own fruits and vegetables, the first resuscitator was donated to the Bellevue Fire Department and funds were donated to keep the Bellevue Library operating.
In 1947, the Overlake Service League Thrift Shop was opened at Bellevue Square. The shop is the longest-standing merchant there.
Today, Overlake Service League focuses on promoting stability and self-sufficiency, and provides college scholarships for Bellevue’s graduating seniors; youth programs including summer school tuition, back-to-school clothes, enrichment activities, and nutritious meals during school breaks; holiday assistance through its Adopt-a-Family program; emergency financial assistance to prevent loss of daycare, utility disconnection and eviction; and individualized services to help adults returning to school.
Those who have been involved with OSL are encouraged to submit material by Dec. 31. Items may be included on public displays in 2011 and all materials submitted will become property of Overlake Service League and may become part of a historical collection housed at Eastside Heritage Center.
Letters and photos should be sent to Overlake Service League, P.O. Box 53203, Bellevue, WA 98015 or e-mail osl@OverlakeServiceLeague.org.
