‘On Safari’ photography exhibit at Pogacha

Drawn to images of the African bush from an early age, Alexis Chavez fulfilled her dream to visit Africa as a young adult. Subsequent journeys to Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Mozambique and South Africa have deepened her understanding and love for both the land and its wildlife.
A combined passion for photography and a natural ability to bond with the wild animals she photographs have helped her create a photographic exhibit coming to Pogacha of Issaquah from August 22 to October 3. After Oct. 3, the show moves to Pogacha of Bellevue where it will run through November. 14.
Chavez’s subjects include lions, cheetahs, meercats and her favorite, the leopard. Her photos capture an expressiveness in the faces and movement of the animals. Chavez says that “the most amazing photographs only happen when you really know the animal.”
Digital images of the endangered animals are printed on metallic paper and mounted on matte Plexiglas, giving them a distinctive look. Sales of Chavez’s photographs support the Modisa Wildlife Project. “Modisa” in Tswana means “guardian” or “shepherd.” The project’s goal is to protect African wildlife.
Chavez was born in Seattle and has lived in New York, Hawaii, Japan and Africa. She holds an honorary Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Conservation from The New School in New York City.
