Wolverines earn baseball league title

The Bellevue Wolverines avenge early April defeat against Mercer Island

With the Class 3A KingCo baseball title on the line, the Bellevue Wolverines reigned supreme against the Mercer Island Islanders.

Bellevue, which was defeated soundly 17-5 by Mercer Island on April 10, cruised to a 6-0 win against Mercer Island on April 29 to clinch the Class 3A KingCo League regular season title. Bellevue improved its overall record to 15-3 with the win. Mercer Island dropped to 14-5. The Wolverines waited 19 days after its lopsided loss to redeem themselves on the diamond and they did so in resounding fashion with everything on the line. Bellevue head baseball coach Chris McCormack’s words after the 17-5 setback to Mercer Island proved to be prophetic.

“It’s baseball. Sometimes things like this happen. We’ll just have to move forward and take it one day at a time. Unfortunately you never want it (loss) to happen like this but other than today we’ve been playing really good,” McCormack said on April 10. “You got to have a short memory and just come back ready to play in the next one because we are right back at it.”

The Wolverines won eight of their final nine games to close out the regular season. Capturing the league title is special for any team but to do it against arguably your biggest rival is icing on the cake. The playoffs are on the immediate horizon for the Wolverines. There is no doubt this talented troupe of players is peaking at the right time.
