Team camaraderie is Vikings’ strength

Bellevue Christian football squad is looking to rebound from one-win season in 2014

Not even a 1-9 record during the 2014 season could alter the psyche of Bellevue Christian head football coach Todd Green.

Green, who played football and graduated from Pacific Lutheran University in 1993, exudes the late Frosty Westering mantra of competing against your best self on the gridiron. The Vikings are in the process of building the foundation for the 2015 season during spring football practices in June.

“I bleed that stuff. That is really what we want to be about as a football team,” Green said of Westering’s coaching philosophy. “We want to use football as a vehicle to invest in these guys but also teach them that they can be excellent and great at something that glorifies God and glorifies your teammates. Frosty was a huge influence in my life.”

The third-year head coach is excited about the talent returning to the fold this fall. He said there are several cornerstones of the team, including Taylor Paulson (receiver/cornerback), Dylan Parsons (running back/defensive back), Garrett Olerud (offensive lineman/defensive lineman), Alex Irizzary (center, linebacker) and David Postma (quarterback/linebacker).

Postma enjoys being the senior signal caller of his squad. This past May, Postma was the starting goalie for the Vikings boys soccer team that captured second place at the Class 1A state tournament.

“It is a quite a different experience in both sports but one thing remains the same and that is I have to do my job and do the best I can. That is so important to the team,” Postma said.

The senior team leader said the Vikings didn’t hang their heads despite losing nine of its 10 games last season.

“We have a lot of things to build on. For us we found a lot of success in things other than wins,” Postma said. “The strength of the team is our teamwork and how we play the game together.”

Green said his team is coachable and has totally bought in to the principles of the program.

“As a coaching staff, we’re definitely zeroing in on our players and have put in a lot of time evaluating what are the schemes, positions and systems that are the best for our kids,” he said. “I feel like we’re poised to get a whole lot more out of the kids we have. We’re excited about this season.”
