The sun was shining, the runners were trained and ready, but due to a organizational snafu, some participants in the Virginia Mason Team Medicine Seafair Marathon were left out of the race.

A total of 400 runners missed the start of the marathon because there wasn’t enough transportation to take them from Bellevue’s Downtown Park to the starting line at Husky Stadium in Seattle.

Buses were scheduled to begin taking runners from the Downtown Park at 5 a.m. More people showed up for the final 6:45 shuttle than expected, which resulted in 400 of the 4,800 registered participants unable to get to the starting line.

Calls to Seafair Public Relations Director Dan Wartelle were not returned as of the Reporter s’ deadline.

The marathon started at Husky Stadium, crossed the 520 floating bridge and split into either the full marathon or half-marathon. Both races ended at the Downtown Park.

Kenyan Edward Kiptum won the marathon with a time of 2 hours, 20 minutes and 28 seconds, edging out his training partner Bethuel Cheruiyot by 30 seconds. Wendy Terris, of Milwaukie, Ore., won the women’s competition in 2:50:55.4.

Kiptum and Terris each won $1,500 for their victories.
