Clay Strom just wants to have a little fun, and he doesn’t mind if you come along for the ride, err, run.

Strom, who will be a senior at Hazen High School in the fall, is a Newcastle resident hoping his Aug. 29 Newcastle 5K run/walk can become a staple of the community.

“We want this to become an annual event; we want to see it really grow,” said Strom, a cross country and track runner for the Highlanders. “We want to have a little fun and see some good participation, people having a good time.”

All proceeds from the event, above the operating cost, will be donated to the Hazen cross country team.

“My father and I are big runners, and he came to me with the idea to do a community event, something cool that everyone can participate in,” Strom said. “It’s promoting exercise for one. Another reason is it is something to bring the community closer.”

Those interested in the event can find more information online at www.newcastle5k.com. Potential participants can register at FootZone stores in Issaquah, Bellevue or Redmond until Thursday, Aug. 27, or online at www.active.com until Aug. 28. Registration is $25 per individual or $20 per runner in a team of four. Race day registration is $5 for individuals and teams.

The event will be held at Lake Boren Park in Newcastle at 9 a.m. on Aug. 29.

“Right in the heart of Newcastle,” Strom said. “It’s a big open spot that can fit a lot of people. We couldn’t think of a better place to have it.”
