Diminutive star makes a sizable impact

Interlake Saints volleyball team captain Jamie Wagner is a dedicated athlete

Volleyball typically is a sport where the tallest players reign supreme.

The majority of outside hitters hover around six feet and utilize their height advantage to deliver smashing points from the perimeter. Interlake junior outside hitter Jamie Wagner may only be 5 feet, 5 inches, but she is a powerful presence from her favorite position on the court.

“It’s not about how big you are, it’s about how big you play,” Wagner said.

Interlake head coach Melissa Brodsky said Wagner packs a powerful punch.

“Jamie hits the ball so hard and she can jump out of the gym,” Brodsky said. “She is really good at serving too. We get a lot of points off her serve and also from the outside. Jamie just does a great job.”

Wagner has started at outside hitter since her freshman season in 2012 and was named one of the team captains for the 2014 season.

“It’s a really humbling experience and is great to lead the other nine girls on the team. I want to make sure I do everything I can to help them on and off the court,” she said.

Wagner, who is also the Saints cheer squad team captain, spends the majority of her life at Interlake.

“I’m at school at least 12 hours per day. Cheer practice is before school (begins at 6 a.m.) so we can play sports, too. It’s really rewarding being able to put so much of my time into Interlake,” she said.

Brodsky said Wagner ensures the Saints are prepared on daily basis.

“Jamie is really positive on and off the court. She does a lot of things in the background for our team that go unnoticed and keeps our team really motivated and focused,” Brodsky said. “All the girls on the team love her.”

Reaching the post-season is the goal for the Saints in 2014.

“I really believe we are good team. We have an opportunity to make districts this year,” Wagner said.
