Bellevue College women win big over break

The Bellevue College women’s basketball team hosted and won the Bellevue Women’s Basketball Crossover Tournament, featuring top teams throughout the NWAACC, on Dec. 19.

Sophomore Kelly Sutherland scored 18 points to help Bellevue beat Linn-Benton 58-53 on Dec. 17 in the tournament opener. The Bulldogs followed that win by defeating Spokane 63-56, with 6-foot freshman Sanda Milovic leading the way with 17 points. The Bulldogs also shot 100 percent from the free throw line in the win.

The Bulldogs wrapped things up on Dec. 19 with a 70-61 win over North Division rival Skagit Valley in the championship game. Renton graduate Kelsey Sparks led the way with 23 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three steals. Sutherland and Sparks both made the All-Tournament Team. Sutherland also earned Tournament MVP honors.

The Bulldogs followed the tournament win with a 64-23 win over South Puget Sound on Dec. 27. League play begins tonight, when Bellevue College (7-3) plays Shoreline (4-4).

BC men go 3-2 over break

The Bulldogs’ men’s team traveled to Blue Mountain Community College in Pendleton, Ore., for the BMCC Crossover Tournament Dec. 17-19, losing their first game 82-65 to Clackamas.

Bellevue College rebounded the next day against Green River, notching a 93-78 win. Freshman Rex Nelson led the way with 21 points, while Cedric Clarington added 20.

The Bulldogs finished fourth in the tournament after beating host-Blue Mountain 85-64. Malcholm Love led Bellevue with 19 points, while Jon Humphrie, Brad Valentine and Clarington each added 12 points. Clarington was named to the All-Tournament Team for his efforts.

Bellevue College then destroyed South Puget Sound 106-62 on Dec. 29. Three of Bellevue’s five straters scored nearly half of the Bulldog points: Nelson scored 22, with Daniel Simon and Dallas Searles each adding 13. Love scored 16 off the bench.

Bellevue (5-4) hosts Shoreline (7-3) tonight at 7:30 p.m. to kick off North Division play.

Bulldogs softballers sign letters of intent

Tobey Varney, a 2010 NWAACC All-American and North Region First-Team selection has committed to Concordia University in Portland, Ore., while second baseman Kristen Allen has signed with Western Washington University.
