Bellevue boys, Interlake girls finish fourth | Cross Country State Championships

The Bellevue boys cross country team and the Interlake girls team each earned fourth place finishes, leading all teams at the state cross country championships, held last Saturday at Sun Willow Golf Course in Pasco.

Bellevue’s 135 points ranked behind only Seattle Prep (121), University (99) and state champion North Central (43).

Junior John Fowler turned in the Wolverine’s top finish, taking 20th in 16 minutes, 15.1 seconds. Fowler was followed by senior teammate Phillip Matthews (28th, 16:23), junior Ryan Long (33rd, 16:26) and junior Addison Woolsey (42nd, 16:33). Junior Nick McLean finished 58th (16:52) and junior Will Sheeran came in 82nd (17:15).

The Interlake girls team also took home a fourth place finish, earning the first cross country trophy in school history. Summer Hanson earned top finishing honors for the Saints, placing 18th in 19:27. Hanson was followed by senior Brooke Niemann (26th, 19:42) and freshman Niki Waghani (36th, 20:01). Sophomore Nadia Lucas finished in 39th in 20:05 and was followed by Eleanor Tansley (57th, 20:28). Freshman Annie Davis finished 63rd in 20:34 and sophomore Grace Hsieh wrapped things up for the Saints by finishing 100th in 21:26.

The Interlake boys team finished eighth overall with 230 points. The Saints’ highest finisher was senior Ashish Suntosh, who finished 40th in 16:47. Sophomore Sam Giner finished 47th (16:50) while senior Max Crowell took 57th in 16:56. Senior Staal Githinji finished 65th (17:02) while Jay Taves finished 98th. Junior Ivan Leniski finished 112th (17:51). The Saints final finisher was Axl Alvarez, who came in 118th in 17:57.

The Bellevue Christian girls team also finished eighth. The Vikings top finisher was freshman Isabella Chaffey, who took 27th in 20:55. Junior Bree Oldham finished just behind Chaffey in 29th in 20:58, while sophomore Noelle Crosby finished 26th in 21:30. Junior Val Montag took 87th in 22:44, junior Alison King finished 96th in 22:58, senior Jeannie Beth Sleight took 121st in 23:50 and Janessa Darr finished 125th in 24:04.

Bellevue Christian sophomore Daniel Nortz finished 30th in 17:07 on the boys side. Senior teammate Michael Milbank took 51st in 17:36.

The Bellevue girls team finished in 13th in the Class 3A race. The Wolverines highest finishers were sophomore Erika Lovas (37th, 19:53), junior Vandan Kasar (59th, 20:16) and sophomore Julia Ellings (71st, 20:32). Junior Tiffany Eisenbach finished 97th in 21:04 and freshman Holly Warendorf took 105th in 21:20. Junior Alexis Neuman finished 124th in 21:57 and freshman Annabeth Rodriguez took 134th in 23:02.

Laynee Viniotis was the sole Sammamish runner in the meet. She finished in 89th in 20:45.

Newport sophomore Jessica Spray was the only Knights’ runner in the state championships. She finished 28th in 19:10.
