Glenn O. Young

Glenn O. Young of Bellevue, WA, passed away July 29, 2009. He was born in 1924 in Wenatchee, WA, to Ogle and Eunice Young. Glenn was a lifelong athlete, teacher, athletic coach, Navy pilot, husband and father of 3 daughters. He played basketball for the Wenatchee Panthers, graduated Wenatchee H.S. in 1942, and continued to play basketball for the University of Washington. As a freshman, he also played varsity baseball for the Huskies. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. After his first year at UW, he began flight training to become a Navy pilot. During that time, at various college training bases, Glenn continued playing basketball for Navy teams. He returned to UW where he graduated and later completed his Masters of Education. In 1950 he married Marcia Myers of Seattle and they moved to San Diego when Glenn was recalled by the Navy during the Korean War. Aircraft carrier landings were a regular part of his navy experience during that time. He was player and coach for the Navy’s AirPac basketball team. After the war, Glenn was a teacher and coach in Leavenworth and North Bend and in 1957 he began teaching in Bellevue. He taught business classes and coached a winning men’s basketball team during his 14 years at Bellevue High School. He retired from Bellevue Community College where he was an instructor and coach of the men’s tennis team. Glenn was an avid tennis player. He played tournaments around the NW, Arizona and California, and for a time, held a USTA senior men’s ranking of #1 in the Pacific Northwest.Glenn is preceded in death by Marcia, his wife of 36 years. He is survived and missed by his longtime companion, Sandy Gesell; daughters, Caron (Rick) Horter, Cynthia Young, Catherine Young; sister, Joy (Richard) Ulrey; grandsons, Nathan and Kerry; nieces, nephews and cousins. A celebration of Glenn’s life is planned for Thursday, Sept. 10, at the Woodcreek Clubhouse, 14203 N.E. 1st St., Bellevue, two o’clock in the afternoon.
