More details are surfacing about Monday’s Navy Yard rampage, among them that shooter Aaron Alexis, a former Navy reservist briefly lived in Bellevue and Seattle. The shootout resulted in 12 deaths, and 14 injuries. Alexis himself was later killed by police.

The Seattle Times reports that in 2004 and 2005 the 34-year-old who was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. lived in Seattle and Bellevue. From 2007 to 2011 he served in the Navy Reserve. During his time in Washington he developed a criminal record. He was arrested in 2004 in Seattle for using a .45-caliber pistol to shoot out the tires of a construction worker’s car.

Alexis had a valid Washington concealed-carry permit for a .45-caliber Glock pistol and he later told police that he felt “disrespected” by the construction workers. He believed his own car had been tampered with earlier that day. He also claimed his aggressive behavior and anger problems were trauma induced, from witnessing the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York, his former home.
