A University of Washington neurobiology student and long-time Bellevue resident, Omar Abdelbadie, 22, was charged with child rape, just days before his anticipated graduation.

Abdelbadie, who is originally from Cairo, Egypt and was minoring in Japanese, is accused of using marijuana to ply a 12-year-old girl, before having sex with her back at his University District apartment. The girl, who had been living with her sister had earlier that evening run away, and recounted walking “The Ave” before Abdelbadie struck up a conversation with her just before midnight.

Charging papers indicate that she informed the UW student of her age and that Abdelbadie, upon seeing the young defendant, noticed that she was dressed provocatively. According to the girl’s account, Abdelbadie bought her a drink from Safeway before offering to drive her home. When she showed no interest, they returned to his place. There they engaged in sex several times, during which he repeatedly told her “this is wrong”. The following day, Abdelbadie, joined by a friend he’d run into while walking with the girl, escorted her home, where they watched from behind a fence as she walked to her front door.

Abdelbadie’s friend called police after seeing the pair acting “like a couple.” Observing the girl’s behavior, he asked her age. He later learned through conversation that Abdelbadie had engaged in sex with a minor. After his arrest Abdelbadie told police that he had been attracted to the girl when he noticed her on the Ave. When asked if he knew her age, he declined to answer.

A judge set bail at $100,000.
