Flames filled a Lake Hills home on Monday afternoon after a homeowner with a history of arson and mental illness set fire to his own residence.

The subject, a 52-year-old man, reportedly called 911 on March 28 and stated that he was going to intentionally light the house on fire. He has a history of mental illness and has committed past acts of arson, according to the Bellevue Fire Department.

Upon the fire department’s arrival, flames were visible on the second floor, the rear and the roof of the home on Southeast 4th Street. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in roughly 12 minutes, according to department spokesperson Ryan Armstrong.

No firefighters were injured battling the blaze, and the subject’s wife, daughter, roommate and dog were not home at the time. The home’s three upstairs bedrooms and kitchen were damaged in the fire.

The man readily gave himself up to the police and was arrested.
