Armed standoff in Bellevue ends peacefully | Update

A man who pulled a gun on a friend during a late-night chess match and then barricaded himself inside his apartment has ended peacefully.

A 52-year-old man who pulled a gun on a friend during a late-night chess match and then barricaded himself inside his apartment has ended peacefully. The man surrendered to police about 10:20 a.m. Thursday, July 18.

The incident began around 2 a.m. Wednesday after a man went to a friend’s house to play chess. During an argument, the friend pulled a gun. The other man was able to leave and then called 911.

The Bellevue SWAT team responded and closed down several roads around the 1800 block of 108th Avenue Southeast and negotiated with the man.

At one point, Bellevue Way was closed to traffic because of the incident, but was reopened at about 5:14 a.m. Also, Interstate 90 westbound and eastbound exits to Bellevue Way were closed for a time, but reopened shortly before 7 a.m.

At one point, police filled the apartment area with tear gas. Spokesperson Carla Iafrate of the Bellevue Police Department said that after several hours negotiators were able to convince him to cooperate. SWAT members entered the apartment and took him into custody.
