The Bellevue School District (BSD) sent 40 students this year to the High School All-State Honor Groups organized by the Washington Music Educators Association (WMEA). A number of BSD students also were accepted into the Junior All-State Honor Groups made specifically for middle school students. These All-State Honor Groups are highly selective music ensembles made up of music students from schools all over the state.
There are a total of nine All-State Honor Groups: the Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Wind Symphony, Jazz Band, Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Symphonic Choir, Treble Choir and Jazz Choir. The Bellevue School District as a whole sent students to all but one of the nine groups.
In order to join one of the WMEA All-State Honor Groups, students auditioned, recording themselves in the presence of a teacher in the fall and receiving their results in early November. All students who join one of the All-State Honor Groups must be enrolled in the corresponding music performance class at their school. Selection of group members is decided by a central screening committee which ranks the various recordings received. Except for the Jazz Choir and Jazz Band, 90% of the students accepted into these music groups comes from the rankings given by the screening committee. The last 10% comes from additional students selected from schools which were not represented in initial 90% of the students accepted.
This year’s WMEA All-State Honor Groups will perform and rehearse in Yakima from February 12-15. For all four days, the students will be performing, practicing, and living with their music ensemble.
