It starts installing OK but after I enter the serial number a message pops up that says, “Please select a source . . .” and then it shows a list of the hard drives and CD/DVD drive and so I choose the DVD drive.

Then I click OK but it won’t finish installing and I have to cancel out. I shut down the computer and restarted it and tried to install it again but the same thing happened.

What do I need to do to get the program installed?

A While you may have a faulty installation/program disc or a problematic CD/DVD drive, such speculation should be regarded as just that, and not taken as a diagnosis. So, I will answer your question quite literally, which will provide you with a strategy to get Office 2007 installed.

Okay, here we go.

First, right-click on the Desktop > select ‘New’ > ‘Folder’ and name the resulting new folder whatever you choose – something like office_2007 will do. Remember where this folder is on your Desktop.

Next, with the Office 2007 disc in the CD/DVD drive, left-click on ‘Start’ (In Vista it’s the Windows icon in the lower left corner of the Desktop) > click on ‘Computer.’

In the central area of the resulting window, you’ll see the computer drives icons. Right-click on the CD/DVD drive and select ‘Explore.’ This will open up a window revealing the contents of the program disc. Make sure this window is active by clicking in the Title Bar at the top of the window.

Then ‘Select All’ by pressing the keyboard command Ctrl + A (this is the Ctrl key and the letter ‘A’ key held down together).

With everything now selected, ‘drag’ the contents into the office_2007 folder you created on the Desktop.

We’re almost there!

You will now install Office 2007 from the Desktop. Simply open the office_2007 folder you created and navigate to the ‘Setup’ utility and double-click.

The installation will begin and you will be taken through the installation process as if the program were being installed from the DVD.
